Bookkeeping has evolved over the years.  It used to be a tedious task requiring manual postings in various ledgers and journals.  Then came one-write systems that used carbon paper enabling the posting to multiple locations with one writing of the pen.  Not long after came computerized programs that allowed you to do your bookkeeping on your own personal computer.

Now we have on-line bookkeeping also referred to as Cloud bookkeeping.  All it means is the bookkeeping software and data files reside on the internet.  It is the current state of the art.

The real question today is why do you want on-line bookkeeping for your business?  Here are a number of the advantages:

  • Your software is always current
  • Your data is automatically backed up daily and often to multiple locations
  • Your records are secure from theft, fire or natural disaster (consider the impact of your business had your location been impacted by Katrina)
  • You have access to your business records from the office, your home, your customer’s office or anywhere else you have internet access
  • You can allow your accountant access to your bookkeeping at the same time you are using it enabling professional assistance
  • Reduced technology costs and operating efficiencies

Actually, the real question is why you wouldn’t want to go to online or Cloud bookkeeping!
